After paging through many of the regionals from yesterday I noticed many, sadly were less than 50 several less than 40. 34 was the lowest.
Clearly we need more weight classes because we simply don't have enough opportunities for our athletes.

Less than 50?   Are you talking percentage or what.

I'm thinking he means number of wrestlers.

So 1 out of every 3 regionals in the state this year had a regional team average of less than 10 wrestlers per team.  Filling 10 of 14 weights is pretty hard (even with all the combined programs out there.)

Interesting numbers. Now would the story change if we looked at the weight classes that were filled and then look at the teams to see their depth? Meaning was 138 filled 99% over all the regionals and do the majority of the schools have 2-3 wrestlers at 138? I don't know the answer...I have not taken the time to dig into that information. But we know 106 is a tough weight class to fill so if 106 is only filled 10% of the time then it is one weight class swaying the stats. And if schools are deep at a couple weight classes that is were more opportunity lies to potentially grow the sport.

It would take some deep digging to compile those stats I think and will anything change even with that information?

In D2 the average regional wrestlers per weight was 78.  The range was 70 (120 lb) to 88 (152 lb).

In D3 the average regional wrestlers per weight was 67.  The range was 55 (Hwt) to 77(152 lb).

Only five D3 weight classes had more regional particpants than the lowest D2 amount of 70.  Those weights were 74 participants @126, 75 @132, 75@138, 77@152, and 73 at 160.

Here are the D1 numbers:
Average wrestlers per weight 102
Low of 93 @ 220
High of 115 @138

Other than the three Milwaukee regionals (Menomonee Falls 64, Nicolet 71, Oak Creek 68), D1 regionals ranged from 80-100 participants.  (They averaged 10 to 12.5 team members for the entire regional.)

SO WHAT?

If you consolidate/shrink regions or sections you will likely never get them back.  We talk often about getting kids out for wrestling...... maybe some of these kids do because it IS easy to make varsity and get to go to regions or sections.  If you keep them, programs just might grow and fill the empty spots.  Regardless, it hurts NO ONE.
As far as losing records getting too far along and hurting some people's sensibilities again, who cares it hurts no one.
You can NEVER make regions or sections equal.  The same people who yammer about "life not being fair" and learning about "hard knocks" and "everyone getting a trophy" are complaining about their (whether parent/coach/fan)kid not getting to state or sections or whatever.
Sections should be geographical (I know often they are not).  You are always going to have some tough schools together.

SO WHAT? SO LETS DANCE!!!! Grin Grin Grin A little Caddyshack. Wow, you guys must not be involved in it. We love the competition and man were there some battles and the crowd was into it, but there are easier solutions. We all know life isn't fair but when you can make a change for the positive, it should be done.

I most certainly will.

Started working on it last night.

I also have the bodyfat test data. I'll share all of it after team state.
